The Selective Service System (SSS) medals were authorized in October 1971 and consisted of a Distinguished Service Medal (gold), Exceptional Service Medal (silver) and a Meritorious Service Medal (bronze). This medal is awarded to both military and civilian personnel. From 1971 through the late 70's, the medals were encased in a block of Lucite, and were not wearable. In the early 80's, all the military services adopted regulations authorizing the wear of the Selective Service medals on the uniform as a non-military award.
NOTE TO COLLECTORS: The SSS Meritorious Service Medal is frequently identified as the SSS Distinguished Service Medal. Most of the medal/ribbon references contain this error. The DSM has a gold medallion and the MSM a bronze medallion. The ribbons are different. See photo # 2 (for information only, not part of this sale). The medal on the left is the DSM and on the right, the MSM.
